HW is perfectly hot-swappable, but disconnecting before unmount will
cause directly corruption. Also earlier Mac, before April 2002 had FW
power serge problem, which is fatal to bus-powered FW, and may ore may
not be related to this issue.

True...but this problem happened even after the drive was unmounted
correctly. I think the corruption happened on startup or while the
computer was in Target disk mode.
