Yes, but that's by design -- to prevent people from assigning staves to instruments that are not included in GPO, and then complaining that they don't play back correctly.

That's ridiculous. As I said before, notation is obviously becoming a minor feature in Finale.

I disagree, but regardless... if you want the Setup Wizard to work the old way, just don't use the GPO instruments in the Setup Wizard. For your purposes, it sounds like it would be less work to configure GPO manually afterwards.

I do agree that the Setup Wizard can stand to see some improvement, as the scope of what it has to do has expanded considerably over the years. It was originally not designed for expert users such as yourself -- MakeMusic assumed people like you would use your own templates instead. Now, it's become much more importance, since it's the only way to automatically set up your score for GPO playback. It has to handle both score layout AND playback setup, but the original UI isn't really designed to do both jobs effectively. It definitely needs some tweaking -- perhaps a separate step for assigning playback instruments that occurs AFTER you have chosen your score setup?

Darcy, since you have much more insight into this than I do: Will I lose anything if I setup the GPO playback after I originallly setup the score for SmartMusic Playback? Don't tell me yes, that would be an even bigger desaster.

You won't lose anything other than the time it takes to configure your GPO setup manually. Just remember to load only the instruments from the "Notation" folder, and you'll be fine.
