Hi Darcy,
USB hubs can absolutely cause this problem...i.e. the kernal panic
that Dean had. Dean did the right thing by connecting his Midi
interface directly into the computer to see if it helped the problems
he if having at least partially.

MacFixIt site but again...the subscription problem...)

USB Hub Problems with Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger)
When updating to Mac OS 10.4 some USB devices connected to USB hubs
experience problems, including launching applications, kernel panics,
stalls in system responsiveness, and more. If any new or odd behavior
occurs with USB devices connected to a hub, connect them directly to
a Mac USB port instead and see if the problem goes away. Tiger seems
to be more sensitive to USB hubs than previous versions of OS X.
Also check the manufacturer's web site for known compatibility issues.

I sort of doubt Dean's USB hub is the culprit, but anyway, the
only USB 2.0 hub worth getting is the Belkin TetraHub:

It works in either wall-powered or bus-powered mode, but I'm using
in bus-powered mode and it's fine.

Hi Dean,
Tiger may not even support the Zip 100 I was running, I don't
know and can't tell from the site. So, it remains disconnected.
I think Chuck is right...I don't think IOmega is not supporting
the "legacy" software as they are calling it for the Zip 100.
I also had my UM -1 MIDI coming in via a bus, which I changed to
a direct connection via a USB port on the back of the new G5.
Hmmm...does this mean you were running your midi interface through
a USB Hub before? This may be the culprit if it is an older USB
Hub. The newer machines and Tiger don't like the old USB Hubs.
If this is the case, you'll want a new hub. They aren't perfect
with Tiger but they do work. I would suggest getting a powered
(this means it comes with a "wall wart" :-)) USB 2.0 hub. Hubs
that get their power from the computer can be problematic.
I'm off to walk the dog and do Sunday sorts of things :-)
Take care,
Karen
