I'm not a Mac person, but I think I did make the point in one post that using a CD-RW like a floppy (that is, RWing it) does require third-party packet writing software.

I don't remember you saying that, but if you did, clearly Dean missed it. All he heard is "You can use it like a floppy" -- which is unfortunately very far from the truth in OS X. (Unless you go out and buy the commercial third-party software that enables this.)

In Windows, you need to format a CD-RW (put a filesystem on it) before you can put files on it. I think if you try to write to an unformatted CD-RW, Windows treats it like a CD-R -- that is, it burns data which is then not deletable.

In OS X, there's no need to manually format the disc when you write to it for the first time -- the OS handles that for you. You only need to format the disc if you want to wipe it and start over.
