I like to have measures the same width where space allows, but let this 'luxury' go when things start getting tight. To do this I generally use only 2 settings for minimum measure width - either '1200' to force even measure width, or '1' to cram as much in as possible. It can also help to reduce the spacing width scaling factor down from the fibonacci number of "1ยท618" - although the spacing will obviously start to distort beyond acceptable.
Document Options > Music Spacing >Spacing Widths > Scaling Factor That said, if I really must butcher a whole bunch of measures in then it's always a case of rolling your sleeves up and tweaking the beat spacing charts!
