I suspect that it is more correct to split the "re" on its own eighth.

Can you help?
Either way can be correct. Some composers don't care, some do. Even
if the composer doesn't care, the singer or chorus director probably
will. (And even if the composer does care, the singer or chorus
director might overrule him....)
The point is, it's an artistic decision. If your composer is clear in
writing what he wants -- and from your description, it sounds like he
is -- you should leave it alone.
