Well, it actually *doesn't* work the same -- hence this thread.

Obviusly, it all depends on context, of course -- I already cited a 
case where layers work better than V1/V2 (ties across the bar) -- but 
in general, I think V1/V2 should be used more often than most of the 
folks on this list tend to recommend, and particularly in cases where 
the voices branch in the middle of a measure, which requires hidden 
rests when you use layers/
