This somewhat related to Finale, and somewhat tangential. Below is a link to an article I read in hard copy about yet another music format using XML. It claims to incorporate, among other things, the MusicXML that Recodare developed used in the Dolet plug-in.

From http://www.ims.org is the following abstract:

"MUSIC XML - A MUSICAL APPLICATION STANDARD USING THE XML LANGUAGE FOR INTELLIGENT MANUFACTURING OF MUSIC FOR CDs, DVDs, WEB In spite of the acute need for a standard for WEB and network distribution, CD-ROMs, DVDs, etc., there does not exist a universally accepted way of encoding sound, music, symbolic representation of sound and music, music notation and the like. Moreover, there is a need to describe and process all the different layers of music information, because, while there exist de-facto standards for some particular layers only - such as MIDI for performance, NIFF for notation, and some proprietary formats - none of them can be applied to other layers. The XML language will ease interchange and translation from one layer to another, across different applications and even different users. XML can be seen as a meta-representation, a description and a processing tool for music information in a multi-layered environment. It can also be used for applications that join layers corresponding to structural, symbolic, score, MIDI, and other representations of digital sounds. In addition, XML can be seen as an integrating tool for already defined and accepted common standards for music representation. It will the tool for the manufacture of music in all media."
