Hey Chuck,
First impression: Saxes - pretty decent, though I miss a little
of the buzz I'm used to hearing in the altos. Tenor and bari
sound OK. I loaded the Key switch versions of the brass but get
no mute switches when they are indicated in the score???? I must
be missing something.
Keyswitches aren't handled automatically because Human Playback
does not (yet) support JABB! You will have to wait for Finale 2007
for that. Meanwhile, you can create your own keyswitching
expressions using
Playback -> Dump.
Hmnnn? No experience with this. Doesn't mean I'd find it hard, just
don't know about it.
Hi Darcy,
OK, it's not me then. I don't know if I'll bother to try this or
just lazily wait for 2007. Be nice to have this and a better way of
controlling the proportions of swing in the 8th notes. Is Robert
working on that, or are there too few of us with that need to be
worth his attention?
I just played back a fairly complex big band score - pretty long,
lots of notes, and with tempo changes etc. My 1.8 GHz G5 w/3.5 MB
RAM (thought that might be useful someday) seemed to do just fine. I
halfway expected that Finale might crash, as it has done a few times
when I start a large playback, but it didn't, and the sounds were OK
- no choking or anything. I didn't even take the time to open the
mixer and lower the overall levels, and it was OK.
I haven't yet been able to isolate this for sure, but it might be
that quitting and restarting Finale, or even Finale and the computer,
from time to time, may be helping with the crashing problem. It's
only happened once since 2006a, and the fact that I've adopted new
quit and restart methods.
Anyway, this is pretty good stuff (JABB, I mean) and probably quite
comparable to the GPO sounds. Those who like those will probably
like these. If there's time in Tom Hopkins' schedule sometime, maybe
we can work together to massage the bass sound and make it more
beautiful. Still, it's light years better than the thumpy orchestral
bass pizz sound for jazz playback.
That's the news at 5:00 (PST)
Chuck
How is performance on your system? I can't run more than a couple
of instruments in JABB because my Mac mini is far below the minimum
spec (1.8 GHz G5).
