Thomas Newman is the composer of the score for Six Feet Under. Alan Ball also used him for American Beauty, and I find his style quite recognizable (which may mean he doesn't have much breadth as a composer). I see from the IMBD entry: http://imdb.com/name/nm0002353/ that his latest project is the recently-released Jarhead, which I would expect to have a very different feel. I've studied American Beauty at some length (it is one of my all-time favorite movies), and the use of music, musical themes and musical forms is quite complex and interesting. -- David W.
