Possibly a better way out is to do the entire 12/8 part with invisible tuplets. You can still have an independent time sig, but it will be 4/4 shown as 12/8. Getting to that from where you are may not be as bad as you think. You can use my Mass Copy plugin to quickly copy an invisible tuplet to every beat in the 12/8 part.
