I don't know if this answers your question, but you can add stuff without messing up the adjustment you made by first selecting a stuff below where you want to add a new stuff. There is a gottacha on this (possibly a bug?). When you do this, the value entered for top spacing is applied to, not the new stuff, but the selected stuff which is one below the new one.
