I agree that the wizard could work better than it does, and that the wizard in conjunction with GPO leaves a lot to be desired. However I do not think there are simple solutions, particularly since different Finale users have very varied requirements.

Before GPO arrived I had edited the instruments.txt file so that with the wizard I could set up a score with, for example, Horns 1 & 2, Horns 3 & 4, Trumpets 1 & 2 etc. And I have the string section set up so that I can load 2 staves each for Vlns I, Vlns II, Vlas and Cellos. I also edited staff names to my liking, in many cases changing the abbreviated instrument names. It is hard to know how MakeMusic could do this to everyone's satisfaction.

I have done something similar with the gpofullinstrument.txt file for Garritan sounds.

I certainly understand the frustration of those who try to set up a score with GPO and find the repertoire of instruments is severely limited to those that have GPO sounds.

Perhaps a solution might be that the instrument list that appears in the wizard with GPO should list all instruments, with an asterisk by each one that has no GPO sound. The user would have the possibility of loading some sort of substitute, such as bassoon for saxophone, or flute for voice, at their discretion.
