Erhard Karkoschka, "Notation in New Music". Praeger, 1972. ISBN 0275534405.

It is out of print now, but a "must have" book for modern notation. Aside
from the scores themselves, my three references for new music are:
Karkoschka; Cage's "Notations", also out of print (ISBN 0685148645); and
Moeller/Shim/Staebler's new "SoundVisions", which follows in the tradition
of the Cage book (ISBN 3897272725, available from Amazon.de, not yet on
Amazon.com).

For anything not covered in these, I turn to the notation references for
traditional music.
