open system preferences and network
choose your modem from the show pop-up menu
click modem, and turn sound on

I know I had sound in Panther. It's not that problematic at the
moment, since I know the line and number works, but when I am away and
using a hotel telephone connection it's always useful to have that
connecting sound. Anyone? Off-list, if you like.
