I find it faster to use voices, as you only need to activate this feature when you need it, specifically, when you want to indicate changing harmonies under a long note. When I'm entering a figured bass with Ansgar's font, one key combination switches from lyrics to speedy entry, one click changes to voice two, a couple of taps on the numeric keyboard to enter the right size of rests, a couple of back- arrows coupled with the "O" key to hide the rests, a key combination back to lyrics and you're set to enter the figures! And one more thing. I know some people (usually librarians) like to complain that the numerals in this font don't look like the figures from some of the established publishing houses (Baerenreiter comes to mind). The musicians I have worked with however tend to like them and find them much easier to read than those miniscules in, say, the NBA (the edition, not the athletic association!).

I use layer 2 to enter extra rests (notes, actually, until I realized you could put lyrics under rests!), and then hide them all in one go with. Is it easier with voices than with layers?
