Since I don't use it to print music, that's hard to say. However, My dad uses the same printer, and he prints about 100 pages a day, and I can definitely say that it is much cheaper than a laser. Admittedly, my dad uses the economy mode, but even in the HQ mode I am pretty sure that you will get more out of 50 ink cartridges than you would get out of 1 laser cartridge. 50 ink cartridges cost about as much as one low cost toner cartridge.
I admit freely that I don't have any statistics on this. Naturally if you bought 50 original Canon ink cartridges you would have spend about 10 times as much, in which case laser is cheaper.
