I have also written to tech support about this. The replies were
strange, to say the least. First the guy (who had better be nameless)
wanted me to send a file. I complied, and suggested that either (1)
these options should actually do something or (2) they should be grayed
out. I got this reply:
"These are options for the crescendos and decrescendos, not slurs. You
are using the tool that is made to affect settings for all of these.
They should not be greyed out, one just must make sure to know what
they will affect. "
This was followed by:
"You must be using the command click menu.
This method recognizes this as a Smart Shape, not specifically as a
SLUR"
and when I pointed out that other options that don't apply to slurs
really are grayed out in the menu, and furthermore that the manual says
that the "make horizontal over system break" option should apply to
slurs, I got this:
"I am not certain, I will ask a developer."
Now I'm waiting for the reply from the developer. We'll see if I get
the same reply that Dennis got.

MM just replied about the "make horizontal over system breaks"
feature (or potential bug!) for slurs:
"The engineer agreed that this option should be grayed-out. The
documentation is a misprint. He said that it could be a potential
feature request to have slurs also follow this rule."
That is in obvious disagreement to the manual, and quite frankly, I
don't believe it. So what does he say it is for?
