Thanks Don and Owain,

Actually John Knowles got back to me fairly quickly, with some ideas. I'm
curious as to why his post didn't show up, as the the first one from him
clearly had the list in the 'to' box.

All my examples are short (4 measures), so I do enjoy a certain flexibilty
in how I show them.
I ended up using 2 treble staves and 2 tab staves.
The Top (treble) staff is labeled 'Played As:' and shows normal notes on
layer 1 and harmonics where they are fingered with diamond heads on layer 2.
The next (TAB) staff, labeled "Fingered as:" shows the fingering for staff 1
The next (treble) staff is labeled 'Sounds Like' and shows the same example
at pitch.
The bottom (TAB) shows the fingerings that would be required to produce the
same pitches without the use of harmonics.

At present, I'm just writing this for my own website (
www.samplesmith.com ). If I can get some interest from one of the guitar
mags, I expect I'll have to do something to make the illustrations smaller.

This article will lead up to another one about playing clusters on the
guitar, utilizing open strings, stretches, and artificial harmonics, with an
attempt to develop some rules or a catalog which I hope will be useful for
arrangers, composers and sound designers. I'd be interested in any
suggestions any one might like to make.

thanks all,

Keith Smith

I too know not enough about guitar notation to give a definite answer.
However, if what you're trying to do is change individual noteheads to
diamond shapes, use the Note Shape Tool in the Special Tools palette:
double-click individual notes, or dragging to select multiple ones,
after selecting a measure to work with by clicking on it. Depending on
the font and the choice of noteheads, you may need to adjust Stem
Connections (in Options - Document Settings - Stems) to align the
diamonds with the stems.
