One of Walter Bergman's "Rules for ensemble playing":
"A right note in the wrong place is a wrong note."
I think my favourite is:
"Play the same piece",
not just for its glorious obviousness but also for the amazing number of
times that it is disobeyed by amateurs (some of whom lose concentration
rather easily) in a rehearsal.
