Historically, the dynamics filter has gotten finer and finer over time. At first there were just p and f. The rest were gradually added in the order ff, pp, mf, fff, mp, ppp. At each stage, the difference betw. adjacent levels got narrower.
The same thing has happened with vocal categories. In Mozart's day, there were just soprano, tenor, and bass. Then they added mezzo-soprano and baritone. Now there's bass-baritone, and some people like to distinguish a "baritenor".
Not to mention all the fuss over lyric, dramatic, spinto, lyric spinto, lyric dramatic, dramatic spinto, etc, etc.
