I apologise for my disparaging remark about noodling. But I am
heartened that my understanding of the term is not unrelated to yours.

Mindless? Free-form, perhaps, but if well done, definitely not
mindless! "Noodling" especially refers to the busy weaving of
counterpoints of clarinets around the simple melodies found in
Dixieland music, and it's often not simple, not easy, and not done
without thought unless the player is very god and very experienced.
Now some of the attempts at jazz I've heard some violinists do...
