Thanks for the opinions. I was half expecting an across-the-board "no you mustn't do that!", and I'm glad there are a number of differing views on this matter.

Regarding the Ted Ross book, what I like about it is that it manages to cover a fairly dry subject in a way that for the most part is an interesting read. I also love the optimism of the "Teach Yourself..." prefix in the title, like it was "Teach yourself Spanish" or part of an earlier version of some "..for Dummies" series.
