Hi Lawrence,

Fake is another term for improvise. A standard (old) Fake Book, legal or otherwise, has melody, chord symbols and lyrics, that’s all.

I had to go to my 1950s Fake Book, just the other day, to get the lyrics to an old tune. I have also used it to figure out the form of a song, so I could see how the arranger screwed it up. I never knew that “Cherokee” was a double song form!

Alright,  I give up - what's a fake book?

Cheers,

Lawrence
