Yep, she learned it ALL from me!

Nah, not really. She was very bright and motivated, and though she was a jazz voice student, it was fairly obvious that her interests lay elsewhere. I honestly had no idea that she was so talented a songwriter at the time.

Part of what I hope is a hallmark of a good program is that the students can graduate and use what they have learned to succeed in just about anything they choose. I think the idea is not to make a square peg to fit into a square hole somewhere, but to make a plasticene peg that can mold itself to fit a lot of different places, but with enough stiffness to have an opinion without making it inflexible, with enough substance so that it doesn't get spread too thinly, but can be baked into firmness by experience... OK the analogy is falling apart now. We don't perform miracles at school, we only throw some stuff at them, hope enough of it sticks, and the rest is up to them.

How was she as an arranging student? I think she (and her husband, Win Butler) are really gifted songwriters.

Lead singer of Arcade Fire, Régine Chassagne, was my arranging student at McGill a couple of years ago. Hey, maybe a university education DOESN'T condemn you to obscurity, after all!
