It's customary to declare the notes a tympani will play at the start of a score ( I'm told). I have four notes ... G A B D...does it matter the ORDER I list them with the header in the score?

I currently have "Tympani (G A B D)"

Current spelling is "Timpani" -- I label the staff something more like this (probably will only look right in a fixed-width font):

              D
              B
Timpani A
              G

I do it this way to clarify which order I want the drums and pitches to be tuned. For ideal placement, I simply label the staff "Timpani" with the word centered top-to-bottom, and with enough space to the right so I can insert the actual pitches as expressions. That way the word Timpani is centered between the middle two pitch labels.

Then when the drums need to be retuned, be sure to specify something like "change D to E" to save the timpanist time in having to figure out the changes.
