Hi All,

I have been having some problems getting the drum kit staff to do what I
want when using it from the wizard set up. I'm wanting to use bass drum
- first space, side drum - third space, and cymbal top space - standard
notation requirements for jazz band.

However, I don't get correct notation or appropriate MIDI sounds when
setting up through the wizard. I usually end up opening an existing file
(that has my drum requirements working), copying a bar and pasting into
new document. Copy and manipulate further from there. What am I doing
wrong?

Humorous answer -- what you're doing wrong is trying to use Finale's percussion maps at all! :-)

I find that I have to do all that stuff by hand, not using the wizard. And that I have to do it BEFORE entering any notes.

I find also that using General Midi Entry and Playback works best.

It really isn't hard to do what you want to do, but it takes patience.

In the Percussion Map dialogs, you need to select General Midi Entry and Playback, then click the EDIT button to actually define the note-placement and playback sounds. Actually, you simply change (if necessary) what is already listed, and the one step that many people miss is to be sure to check the box that says USE THIS NOTE (or whatever it is labeled) so that any notes you want used on a specific staff will actually work.

I've never found Finale's wizards to be all that helpful, finding that there is so much tweaking necessary to get the results I want that it's just far easier to do it all myself. I wonder how many novice Finale users have jumped ship to Sibelius simply because Sibelius' wizards are more helpful to get started working on the actual music -- the wizards are one major area where Finale needs significant overhaul.
