I want to tap the collective knowledge of the List for a personal
project. As a few of you know, I'm getting married in two weeks.
* I'm basically thinking in terms of the 1650-1750 era, with some
sort of standard chamber music instrumentation, but I'm not stuck on
that, if some other era or style can accomplish the same goals.
* The wedding will be outside, in a lovely garden-like setting.
There will be about 70 guests, including lots of young children. Our
procession will be non-standard, with bride and groom entering
simultaneously from different directions and meeting in the middle.
Just played a lovely outdoor wedding with a broken semi-renaissance
consort (2 recorders, violin, classical guitar, bass gamba), and we
used a Jacobean piece from "Jacobean Consort Music" in the Musica
Britanica series, "Alman: The Honeysuckle." Absolutely perfect for
the use. Unfortunately I'm a 'live music' guy and have no idea where
one would find a recording.
However, that suggests that any renaissance Pavan (which was, in
fact, the type of processional that would have been used) or Alman
would work if the recorded tempo is right. Second choice, listen to
some Corelli Sonatas da Camera, either solo or trio sonatas, for a
movement with the right pacing and feeling. Proper length could be a
problem, unless you plan to use a fadeout. The famous Purcell
"Trumpet Voluntary" by Jeremiah Clarke is also possible, and there
are others that are less well known.
Our processional was also non-standard. The groom was Ukranian, and
there was a stop behind the guests where some preliminary ritual took
place, then a continuation to the ceremony area in front of the
guests. I originally was going to use a second Alman for the second
processional, but at the rehearsal it became evident that continuing
with the first processional music would give greater continuity to
the ceremony, and the bride approved it.
