Not disagreeing, but this statement in itself does pose new questions:
Why was it necessary for anyone to confirm this if there wasn't any
question about it in the first place?

Johannes and all,
You are right about this, of course. Many admonitions that clarify for us now would not have been made if the practices they discouraged had not been in vogue, at least to some extent. One thinks of the admonition against orchestral improvisation!

I just sent a post which I hope will answer your request. I'm trying to get a paper of my own out at the moment, and didn't type in the footnotes with the text, but if someone can't get their hands on the volume I cite and really, really wants to know, ask and I'll send the information on.

These and similar citations are in a number of places, and I don't have them all at my fingertips right now. As I said in the other post, Rosenblum seems to me to have a balanced and representative selection of sources generally, not just regarding this question. I know that some who compile an accumulation of references in this manner do select very carefully to bolster their own point of view, but I don't think she does.

The general point I was trying to make in my first post was that there are sources on this beyond one person's opinion versus another's. Of course, how one uses the sources are a matter of opinion and interpretation as well, but there are things that go into forming these opinions outside of one's own head and taste.
