I did some more Googling, and according to the latest reports, the  
Intel Macs *do* support booting from an external USB HD (which was  
contrary to what I'd read at first). There are even reports of people  
successfully booting WinXP on a MacIntel using an external USB drive  
(Boot Camp only officially supports the internal HD).
