Actually, I found the solution: with "Show Active Layer Only"
selected, invoke the "Hide Notes And Rests" plugin -- unlike the "O"
key, it doesn't affect playback. Whew!

After hiding, have you tried then turning on the Playback bit in
the Frame Attributes dialog? (A big pain, but if it works it might
