Perhaps you could rent your oboist an English Horn and a few
lessons? He/she would be most appreciative, I'm sure.
You don't need no steenkin' lessons! Anyone who can play the oboe can
play EH acceptably on 1/2 hour's practice, max. Same goes for the
various different sizes of other WW, except the cbn (the fingerings
differ) and maybe picc.
I've heard the oboists who play EH after a half hour, max, and I've
heard the ones who spend real time on it and take lessons. I'll take
the latter, thank you.
I had the chance to work with Don Menza a few years ago, and asked him
about extreme doubling, and his take was that the more difficult and
instrument is, and the less you play it, the more practice time you
need. He practices much less on the sax than he does on the flute, for
example.
But as one who doubles extensively, I only advertise myself on those
intruments I play well enough to feel confident and competent enough to
go head-to-head against people who only play one instrument on (trumpet
and trombone, mostly). The tertiary instruments (french horn, tuba,
etc.) are things I'll reveal to contractors if they ask (as in: "Damn -
this calls for french horn/baritone/tuba/whatever), but won't put on my
business card or advertise for.
