Dear all -

Is the proper way to represent unmeasured tremolos three slashes across the note, regardless of the value of the note?

My understanding is that when there are no flags, use three.

With one flag or beam, use two (adds up to three.)

With two flags or beams, use one (still adds up to three.)

One of the problems with this notation is that at very slow tempi there is no way to distinguish 32nds from an unmeasured tremolo. Adding the indication "Trem." over the first note of the passage clears this up, and "Non trem." when the passage ends or over a passage of measured 32nds. I have never seen three slashes on any value shorter than a quarter note, and don't suggest it.

BTW, Bill Duncan's Articulations font has different widths of triple slashes for stemmed notes and whole notes, and he has included positioning information that works marvelously. I always hated whole notes with tremolos (like timp rolls) until Bill's font came out.
