that it would be longer than a slur over five 8ths, for instance?
It wouldn't necessarily be longer -- we're not talking metrically, but
physical length on the page. If the music were in 3/2 or 2/2 time and
there were no shorter values in other parts, a slur over three
half-notes would be shorter than a slur over 2 8th-note should there
also be 32nd notes or 64th notes playing beneath those 2 8th notes.
