Ah, but one of my REAL pet peeves is the voice teachers who refuse

You make an excellent point, to which I add:
A lot of what causes voice problems outside the classical world is
the sheer AMOUNT of singing that most other styles require you to do
in a performance. While many operas are staged one night on, one
night off, then a nice break before the next series and the principal
singers have six or eight pieces to sing a night, in many pop, jazz
and Broadway shows the singers are using their voices for HOURS a
night, several nights in a row! A musical like Sweeney Todd has vocal
demands similar to an opera, but they perform it EIGHT times a week
for months! One needs exceptional technique and endurance to survive
that pace.
