Ah, but one of my REAL pet peeves is the voice teachers who refuse to teach the basics for healthy singing to students who are interested in the worlds of music outside opera, and then turn around and use them as examples that singing pop or jazz or Broadway is bad for your voice. It's called a self-fulfilling prophecy!

You make an excellent point, to which I add:

A lot of what causes voice problems outside the classical world is the sheer AMOUNT of singing that most other styles require you to do in a performance. While many operas are staged one night on, one night off, then a nice break before the next series and the principal singers have six or eight pieces to sing a night, in many pop, jazz and Broadway shows the singers are using their voices for HOURS a night, several nights in a row! A musical like Sweeney Todd has vocal demands similar to an opera, but they perform it EIGHT times a week for months! One needs exceptional technique and endurance to survive that pace.
