I am not an attorney in any jurisdiction, and am not well informed about Australian copyright law. You don't indicate who it was that advised you that the item was no longer available. In my experience in the U.S., "It's no longer available" is not reliable unless it is known to be from the publisher. I know of music retailers who used this explanation for a variety of reasons, many of which had nothing to do with the actual availability of music. With this in mind, in your situation, I'd personally research who owns the copyright to the work, and contact them directly about obtaining a replacement copy; and if the publisher declines to provide one, ask for the copyright and permissions department and attempt to obtain permission to make the copies you require, perhaps in consideration for a payment equal to what you would have to pay to obtain the new set.
