This incompatibility is, at least to my understanding, not completely Apple's decision. Rather, Finale has changed the way it uses fonts in OS X, and cannot deal with the old encodings, whereas it seems other programs do that just fine. I don't know why that is, but I do know that I had to change the encoding for my own fonts just because of Finale.

In case this helps anyone, I could do what I needed in TypeTool which is a low cost font editor from Fontlab. I don't think you need the full grown Fontlab or Fontographer to do that.

However, it's been some time that I have done it, and I wouldn't remember any steps, although if someone has them I'd love to have an easy guide...
