You know in the baroque, Telemann used to engrave some of his own

where the man found the time to actually *learn* how to do it,
then compose his music, teach students, keep his

In the 18th c., all businesses were family businesses, and everyone
in the family contributed. It is a virtual certainty that Telemann
had his wife and kids doing a lot of the scutwork. They may
actually have done all the actual engraving! There are plenty of
examples of engravers who died, whereupon the wife took over the
business without a break.
And a contemporary music publishing company - Advance Music in
Germany, publishers of fine editions of various kinds of jazz
material, which is being well run by Veronika Gruber since her
husband Hans' unfortunate early death from cancer.
Chuck
Telemann probably learned the necessary skills during his youth,
by watching and imitating.
