A couple of months ago, we discussed how radically things were changed by the advent of desktop publishing. One of the biggest reasons I'm afraid to just publish my editions on my own has been one of being practical. I don't know how distribution works, or if you have a website on the Internet, what it takes to get your rankings up to the point where people know you even have a website (well by that, I mean the people that would even be remotely
interested in purchasing your editions).
I am aware of Lulu.com, and am in the process of trying to decide whether to go that route, or establish a stand-alone enterprise. As far as on-line distribution is concerned, I wouldn't worry about getting your rankings up. If you are offering early music editions, I'd subscribe to the early music newgroups, and place you site in an early-music webring. As far as distribution, I'd not worry much about general distribution, since you probably aren't going to get it, anyway. Register you company or imprint with the music publisher's association in the U.S., or with the religious music publisher's association, so that the occasional brick and mortar store which does with to purchase a copy for a customer can find you, and send review copies to publications such as the Music Library Association journal, and other publications read by people apt to be interested in the editons you are preparing. If you are doing your own website, post a couple of short works, available for free download as ~.pdf files, so that prospective buyers can evaluate your notesetting, and have pages of selected other items available for review, along with small mp3 or cda versions for listening. You can set up an account with a service such as paypal to handle remittances, and you can specify that in most cases, delivery will be by email, upon receipt of payment, or for somewhat larger fees to reimburse preparation, postage, and handling, delivery will be of scores or on optical medium by a delivery method of the buyer's choice, and at his expense.
