Just to be explicitly clear, when I wrote:
The first time you save a file, Finale saves the file with a ~.MUS extension by default.
I was writing from a Windows perspective. I suspect that this is true on MAC, too, but I my confidence level is lower on this.

Not sure about Finale, but while others have opined that Mac OS X requires extensions, I never use them and the computer knows exactly how to open them when I double click. (I can set it to append extensions, but I never got in the habit and see no reason to change.) The only time I get into trouble is when a student sends an assignment and the file arrives as a blank icon. Sometimes double clicking opens it in Word, sometimes I get a window asking me what to translate from, which of course I don't know, and sometimes my computer crashes (although not recently, so that may be an OS improvement). Some which can't be opened by double clicking can be opened successfully from within Word, although I may have to change from "Word Files" to "all files."

Currently using Mac OS 10.3.9, tiPowerbook G4. (Yeah, ancient. Before the bad Sony batteries!!)
