*SO*, what's the advice? Do I stick with Finale or do the Sibelius crossgrade? What I have seen of the new Finale - it looks pretty much the same as Finale 98, except with Aqua-looking buttons and a lot of consumer-level features added that I'll never use. Sibelius on the other hand, looks much slicker and fresher, and I've heard of professionals using it instead of Finale, but all my experience has been with Finale (with C-Lab's Notator sw before that! Does that date me?!? :) )
Finale has changed quite a bit since Fin98! StaffStyles, autoplacing Expressions, linked parts (also in Sibelius 4), Plugin additions, Engraver slurs, much improved Simple Entry (ala Sibelius in some respects).
I don't have enough experience with Sibelius to really give good advice. However, if you are used to the way Finale worked in Fin98 you may well be better off sticking with Finale.
My advice to new users is this: If you want to really get into engraving, want the greatest flexibility, go the Finale route. If you are going to use the software on a more casual basis, and want to learn the software quickly, and get a very good look of your scores "out of the box" without having to get into the inner workings of the software, play around with the Sibelius demo and see whether you like its style. A lot of people with relatively little computer experience, who are new to computer engraving do find Sibelius much easier to use.
