Dear all, I am still figuring out Finale 2007 and I have some
questions. Reading your posts, I do not think that you people realise
how advanced you are, so, if anyone wants to answer me, please go
very slow and do not assume I know a lot about computers, because I
don't.
1) I saw that the GPO does not list a trumpet in C. Suppose I want a
trumpet in C in my score, can I somehow change Trum. Bb in C and
write accordingly or is this just not an option (something I have to
live with)?;
You can change the transposition for any staff in your score using the
Staff tool. If you select that tool and then double-click on the handle
at the upper left of the staff, you are in the staff setup dialog -- if
it really is a staff for Trumpet in Bb, there will be a check in the box
labeled Transposition. Simply UNcheck that box and your trumpet part
will be Trumpet in C. You'll have to edit the staff label, too.
2) This one is easy for you, but not for me. Suppose I have a score
ready and I want it to show to one of you. How can I send it to you
using e-mail? Can I choose between several applications (pdf,
microsoft word, ...), and if so, how do I do this? What is the best
way of doing this?;
If you want to show it to one of us, you can simply e-mail the .mus file
to us. If you want to share it with someone who doesn't have Finale,
you can e-mail them the .mus file and tell them to download NotePad from
www.finalemusic.com -- NotePad is a free Finale file viewer/printer
which also allows simple edits.
You can't turn a Finale document into a Microsoft Word document without
saving each page of the Finale file as a graphic and then importing the
graphics into Word. It's possible but way too much effort just to share
a file with someone else. You can find some free or inexpensive PDF
creator programs. I use PDF995 which is free if you don't mind some ads
on your screen, or you can pay $9.95 and register it to remove those nag
screens. This installs as another printer driver, and to create a PDF
you go to the print dialog and change the printer from your default
printer to PDF995, then click PRINT and it will save your music as a PDF
file, which you can then e-mail to anybody else.
If you choose to e-mail the finale file, it is safest if you zip it up
first using a program like winzip, because for some reason Finale files
which pass through AOL get trashed and won't open.
3) Suppose I have a score ready and I would like you to listen to it,
can I send the music to you? I noticed that some music is available
on the net in MIDI format - this sounds to me like warehouse 'music'
-, so I would like you to be able to listen to the music just as I
wrote it for/with the GPO. Can I make a mp3-file of it, or how can I
proceed? I apologise for my ignorance, but I really do not know;
Under the File menu, there is Save Special, which contains an option to
save as an audio file. This will save the file with the GPO sounds just
as it sounds on your computer. The problem with this is that audio
files are huge and some e-mail servers won't accept files that big. You
can save as either MP3 or WAV -- MP3 files are smaller but can still be
larger than what e-mail servers will allow.
4) Suppose I have a score ready and I am playing it on my own
computer using the GPO. Can I burn the music onto a CD?
Yes -- you need a program which will burn audio CDs. If you have a CD
burner on your computer, then you most likely also have a CD-burning
program which will allow you to create the CD. First you Save Special
(as in my answer to question 3) to create WAV files of your music, then
you use your CD-burning program to burn those WAV files to an audio CD.
5) Suppose I want more sounds / instruments than the GPO gives me
(the version which comes with Finale '07), do I need to buy these
sounds/instruments or can I use the NI Service Center or another
resource on the net?
Yes, you need to buy those sounds. You can buy the full GPO, which
gives you more samples for each instrument, you can buy Garritan Jazz
and Big Band, which includes instruments which aren't in GPO, or you can
buy a different NI-based sample set. There are some others listed at
the Finale web-site which are compatible with the Kontakt2 player which
comes as part of Finale.
6) Is there anywhere a list of plug ins, which list them and tells
you what they are about? Suppose I am interested in a particular plug
in, how can I 'incorporate' this plug in into Finale?
Are you asking if there is some central clearing house which lists all
plug-ins available from everybody, including third-party developers?
None that I know of. If you're asking if there is a list of the
plug-ins which install as part of the Finale installation, simply look
at the Menu and submenus under Plug-In.
To use them, you use the Mass-Mover Tool (the one that looks like a
train engine) to select the measures you want a plug-in applied to, then
under the Plug-in menu, select the one you wish to use and click on it.
To understand this better, you should read the on-line documentation.
You should also investigate Staff Styles, which are a fantastic aspect
of Finale.
Thank you. I guess my day will come and then I will be able to help
other. Best, Will
That's how many of us learned our most useful Finale knowledge, and I
(and many others) are glad to pass along the favor.
