If you're talking about elisions, I like using the elision character.
It's capital "I" in one of the Engraver fonts. (Before that existed, I
used an underline character; imperfect, but still better than just a
space, in my opinion.)
But the option to use the non-breaking space should be there for those
who prefer it. If Finale really is making that disappear, that's a
problem.
