Carl,
What I was wondering was more along the lines of "are there any
xylophone-specific issues that make a four-mallet technique less
practical on xylo. than on other mallet instruments, like vibraphone
or marimba"?
For the playing technique, no. For the sound, well, vibes and
marimba are designed to sustain the tone longer, and xylo is not.
Hopefully, that's the sound you want, or you wouldn't have asked. In
theory, the mallets would have to move faster and strike more often
on sustained chords. However, we've never had room in our pit for
either vibes or marimba for our summer musicals, and have always had
the parts played on xylo, with no problems.
