Hey Jef,
The path is all f****d up on ALL those links you gave. It needs to be
"http://newmusicnotation.COM/", not "http://newmusicnotation./"

This is definitely not a new problem. I can confirm it goes back at
least as far as v2002, and I think it has always been that way.
strange, i have never come across it, but have used cross-staff
tremoli before.
i tried that already, but it only fixes the cases where the 8th
beam is also disconnected from the stem. in this example, i have
also detached the stem from the beam; there seem to be two parts to
the stem (see ...02). i actually found a solution, but then i have
to shift the upper noteheads as well (see ...03).

the thing is i have set all the freeze stems figures out to
accommodate potential layout changes (changes to spacing between
staces with cross-staff notes); the beams react differently
depending on whether frozen up or down, well, way too long to
explain, but it sounds like you know this already.
actually shifting the upper noteheads also solves the problem of
positioning (upper notes need to be moved right to appear properly)
in my case, because there are never other notes played during these
figures. they will sit too far to the right inrelation to the
measure position:
