That policy is about 3 years out of date, seems to me. AOL is 
actually one of the safer email clients these days, as they've built 
all sorts of safeguards and spyware blockers into it. They even 
provide a software firewall (it's a repackaged version of ZoneAlarm, 
in fact).

And AOL provides webmail access, anyway, so it's just a foolishly 
restrictive policy.
