Can someone explain to me how this service can survive? It seems to be
free, it doesn't have adds on the site, how do they earn the money?
One possibility is that they do not intend to make money, but are using
the site as a means of slipping in adware, spyware, or malware past the
defenses of otherwise savvy users. Personally, I'd rather get large
files as email, or from the webspace of an individual user, than through
a third party.
There's a link where they're trying to sell the software that runs the
site for $5000 or the software complete with hardware for $10,000, for
others who wish to run such sites. And following some other links, it
turns out that Axosoft (the company which runs the site and has the
products for sale) has a number of other products for sale, all aimed at
the software market.
It's essentially a "see how well this works, buy it for yourself"
first-hit's-free sort of site.
And it's not unlimited -- files are posted for 5 days or 20 downloads,
so you can't use it for unlimited distribution of something to a large
group of people.
It seems the site is a sort of loss-leader to get people interested in
their products, and can be used for data to convince potential customers
that the product works, works well, and is something that the public is
interested in using. I could envision someone (or several somebodies)
buying the software to run their own versions of such a site, and
charging $10/file while increasing the limitations (allow it to remain
available for longer periods, or allow it to be downloaded a greater
number of times). It wouldn't take all that many users for someone to
make back their investment in the software at that price.
