There is a little utility called PopChar by Ergonis software ($15, I think) that comes in PC and Mac versions that I find handy for this purpose. It puts a little tab in the menu bar that accesses the font chart for any installed font. Every once in a while, I need to create something I've forgotten in Finale, or I need an umlaut or French accent. This makes those things easy.

It looks like a great little utility, but the price for the windows version is $29.99.

I use CharacterMapPro for that purpose, which is free but it isn't nearly as versatile or as complete in what it offers as is the Ergonis product which Chuck mentions. When I get a spare $30, I'll likely get PopChar, as it offers a whole lot more.

I fall for ads for these things more often than I should, and my savings account shows the effects of that. However, this one seems worth the expense to me, even at $30. I'm sure the information is accessible in other ways. I just appreciate the ease with which this puts so much information at your fingertips.
