I was very lucky to get the Mozart piano concerto bug very early,
while in my freshman year of conservatory. Perhaps playing them gives
you a different feeling about them than just listening. Then I had an
excellent course where we dissected all the piano concertos in
detail. That kind of overview really gives one a feel for the style
and procedures, and it turns out that was one of the best learning
experiences ever in terms of its effect on my analytical approaches
to large musical works.

For me, the "readiness" factor was crucial for Schumann. When in high
school and college, I hated Schumann. But a couple of years ago I
coached chamber music and Lieder at a festival devoted to Schumann's
music, and was just bowled over by how great the music is. I also
found that, for some reason, I have an easier time playing the piano
music now (with my rusty, out-of-practice fingers) than I did back in
the day when I was a hotshot practicing 6 hours a day.
