Hilarious (and sad) anecdote here. A talented young Hungarian pop singer immigrated to Canada a number of years ago and settled in Montreal. She made inquiries around soon after arriving to find someone who could arrange a Hungarian folk song in a "contemporary" style. Notice my use of scare quotes, as that word is the one that screwed everything up. She ended up with a local university classical composition professor, who gave her a "contemporary" arrangement, all right! The poor girl was mystified as odd squeaks, squawks, and the occasional french horn elephant call peppered the recording session, which was already full of odd-sounding (to her!) harmonies. Not exactly the sort of thing that was going to make the charts that week! All she wanted was a rhythm loop, some synths, and maybe a guitar and background vocals, and she got "A Hit by Varese."
